Poem-A-Day Challenge, Day 5

Write a poem about something before your time. Maybe it’s a certain time in history. Or a type of music. Or a story that was shared by friends or family–before your time.

Francisco, the Poet

During fiesta

lovely young ladies

compete for crowns

and it was your job

to extol their virtues

on-the-spot, center stage

in the dialect, in rhyme.

I imagine you,

hypnotizing the crowd

in this poetic debate.

I bet the other orators

couldn’t keep up,

even if their candidates

were more attractive

than yours.

Grandpa, my Lolo,

I hope I inherited

some of your talent.
